One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

I am having one of those weeks where I make a to-do list and start checking things off feeling pretty good about what I am getting finished. Then while working on one of the to-do tasks, I realize there are multiple things I left off the to-do list.

I feel like I am doing a delicate dance that is turning out not to be very graceful. Instead, I'm tripping over things and fighting with my two left feet.

In about 2 weeks, the to-do list will be empty and I will go back to being graceful. Maybe.

De-Clutter

It is spring which means it is time for Spring Cleaning. Here are some tips to get your house a little less cluttered as you head into the warmer months:

Go through your closets. Put away all the winter clothes to make room for the cute stuff you need. If you clean your closet, you'll see what you need and not overspend getting stuff you don't need. Make a pile of things you (or your kids) have outgrown to give away.

Go through the toys. Put away what younger siblings will use, but get rid of what your kids have outgrown. Your friends with younger children will be thrilled to get free stuff, your bank account will love a garage sale, or your local charity would love a donation. Don't do this when your kids are in the room or nothing will disappear!

Get rid of school-year papers. Obviously there are some papers you will want to keep that show off your kid's mad math skills or highlight some areas of concern to work on over the summer. But no one will care if you get rid of the numerous spelling tests, coloring worksheets and parent newsletters. If you're overwhelmed with art projects, pick out the best ones and send the rest to grandma (she'll love it!), aunts and uncles, or family friends who love your kids like you do.

Clear out junk drawers. Do as I say, not as I do. Just go through the drawer and get rid of the old batteries, expired coupons, parts that don't go to anything and the pens that don't work. You'll make room for all sorts of new junk to breed over the coming months and it will be like you never missed it.

Shred old files. I really need to do this. My files are jam-packed with ridiculous files that I kept because....I thought I was supposed to. Who cares if I have my electric bill from 2004?

What other things should we all add to our Spring Cleaning list?

Distracted

I've been a bit distracted this weekend from my regular routine. Mr. Bean, who has been working 6 days a week for months and months, had the entire weekend off (plus a half day on Friday)! I haven't known what to do with myself.

Thursday night, a friend called asking if she could come play with String Bean so Mr. Bean and I could have a date. Typically, I would have responded, "Thanks, but Mr. Bean has to work on Friday night." It was nice to take her up on the offer.

Saturday, we slept in. After doing some keyboard shopping for our church, we went out to dinner with friends.

Today, we went to church, did 6 loads of laundry (including folding and putting away), took naps, and went grocery shopping.

It has been a full weekend. Although we crossed several items off our to-do list, I feel rested and ready for a new week!

Being Productive

I have a list a mile long of things that need to get done. Not a single one of them have a hard and fast deadline that needs to be met. They have all been left undone for days, weeks, months... Yet, I feel this need to be productive.

I've been reading this blog lately that talks about leaving the dishes undone and just spending time with your children. I'm all about doing that, but at some point, you have to stop neglecting the to-do list and get it finished. (Isn't that what naps are for?)

Today just might be one of those days that I actually tackle some of those things...

Things on My To-Do List

I'm going to cross these off the list as I accomplish them!

Today:
  • Eat lunch (If I don't add this to the list, I snack all day long)
  • Empty dishwasher
  • Check e-mail
  • Call everyone who signed up church directory photos tomorrow and remind them.
  • Update Facebook status
  • Check e-mail
  • Feed String Bean
  • Pick up Mail
  • Call attorney about updating wills
  • Daydream
  • Nap, if I can fit it in
  • Go to worship team rehearsal
  • Check e-mail
  • Send final appointment list for church directory photos to Bill
Later:
  • Sleep in past 7 am
  • Finish planning String Bean's first birthday party
  • Clean the house thoroughly
  • Laundry
  • Pay bills
  • Finish Christmas shopping (yes, I've already started!)
  • Get String Bean's flu shot
  • Get my allergy shot
  • Find a new address for that wedding card that was returned to sender
  • Blog
  • Think about whether to decorate for Thanksgiving or just skip right over to Christmas
  • Get rings inspected
  • Get assets turned over to a Living Trust
That about does it.
