Another Shooting!

My parents live near Discovery Middle School where a shooting of one ninth grader by another took place last week. Today, another shooting happened within miles of their home. This time it was at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

Apparently, a female professor at the university was denied tenure today and opened fire during a faculty meeting killing 3 and injuring 3 others.

It used to be (with the Colombine shooting) that parents were afraid to send their kids to high school. Then with the Virginia Tech shooting, college campuses became vulnerable. Discovery has brought the middle schools and junior high schools into the violent school category.

I really hope I never live to see an elementary school shooting by elementary school students.

Memory on Display

As I've mentioned, we have been going through our storage items and finding old treasures these last few weeks. One particular item we found last week String Bean was playing with and I forgot about it. Last night, my father-in-law greeted me at the door with it.

It is the bouquet from my BFF from high school, Amy's wedding (not my co-blogger Amy). Amy would probably be surprised to know I have kept those flowers all these years...9 to be exact.

We have proudly displayed this memory on the end table next to my favorite chair. It is a visual reminder of our friendship!

Flashback

Yesterday, I pulled off our street onto Main Street. In front of me was a 1985 booger green Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale. What a flashback to my high school days when I drove my own "booger machine" to and from school.

I pulled up to the stoplight to turn left and the Delta 88 was in the lane next to me. I think the 60ish year old man driving was eating figs, but I took the opportunity to look at the car and remember the thin double white stripe that went from bumper to bumper. I peered into the car and could almost feel the feel of the seats and started to reach up to change the gears on the column shift- then my light turned green so I went on my merry way.

I was surprised that I saw the same car parked across the street from our street. It appears Olds guy works for Walgreens, so I'll be having many flashbacks in the coming weeks and months.

If my sister had remembered to put oil in the booger machine, I could have driven it to the classic car show that String Bean, Mr. Bean, and all the dogs of our fine city attended this evening. Well, if I hold onto my current car for just a few more years, I can enter that in.
